About the book

Hola, it's Cinco de Mayo in Mexico and Juan wakes up to the yummy smell of baked tortillas that his Mom and Grandma are preparing in the kitchen.  He eagerly stuffs his tummy, grabs his festive homemade hat, and rushes out to meet his friend Pancho at the plaza.

The plaza is filled with people celebrating and enjoying the festivities.   The boys encounter a tourist family who want to try tasty tacos and wonder where they can find some.  Luckily Juan's family owns a taco restaurant and the two boys happily escort the visitors to the best tacos in town, his father's diner.  They then act as guides and show the family several attractions.

The book elaborates on the food, culture, kindness and care that the local people share with visitors to their country. Throughout the book the author has added additional information to educate the reader even further on all things Mexican.  After spending a wonderful day together with the family, Juan generously gives away his beloved hat and a piΓ±ata to the little boy in the family.  They smile and wave at each other for a long time as their departure time is finalized.

I especially liked at the back of the book where actual facts and pictures of Mexico appear.  That section would be perfect for a beginner to use for a project on Mexico.  The illustrations are brilliantly and wildly coloured, depicting the spirit of Cinco de Mayo and the country at its best.  They are whimsical and very kid-friendly. This is a fun book to read and designed for discussion.  I am sure both young and old will experience an authentic taste of Mexico as the book is shared together.
