About the book...
This heartwarming tale is about an adorable little porcupette (baby porcupine) that loses his mother. One snowy night his mother goes out to find food and never returns. He waits and waits but she is gone... forever. He bravely weathers the snow looking for her and stumbles across a momma bear nursing her cubs in a warm, cozy den. The cold and scared little guy sneaks in and joins the feasting brood and to his delight (and survival) momma bear lets him stay.
He so longs to belong to the bear family but is scared he will be rejected and abandoned once again as he's so different from the others.
He starts behaving mean and aggressive towards his adoptive siblings and even to his kind surrogate momma. Oh my!! Finally confused and hurting he runs away assuming they don't want him around anyway and he won't even be missed. But this emotionally damaged little porcupette can't be more wrong. Big mama bear comes after him, not to scold him and seek revenge, but to bring him home to her den.
Her unconditional love for him even though he is not her "kind" speaks volumes about being adopted and accepted no matter if you are prickly inside and out. I highly recommend this book. Love trumps all and little porcupette is at peace.
About the author...
Vanita Oelschlager is a wife, mother, grandmother, philanthropist, former teacher, current caregiver, author and poet. A graduate of Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, she now serves as a Trustee of her alma mater and as Writer in Residence for the Literacy Program at The University of Akron. Vanita and her husband Jim were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 2006. She was the Congressional Angels in Adoption award recipient for the State of Ohio in 2007 and was named National Volunteer of the Year by the MS Society in 2008. Vanita was also honored in 2009 as the Woman Philanthropist of the Year by the Summit County Chapter of the United Way.
About the illustrator...
Mike is an award-winning professional artist. Born in 1953 in Akron, Ohio, he went to Coventry Senior High, Class of 1971 and married classmate Gail Smith in 1973. Mike is a self-taught artist. He has created many hundreds of designs for t-shirt and textile impressions for Champion Bowling Supply in Akron, Hooper Handprints, Florida, and Air Waves, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. Mike worked in an artists' colony, Halbert's Incorporated in Akron for a year creating heraldic art. He's been self-employed at Mike Blanc Studios since 1974, and from 1989 till the present he's an associate at Artists Incorporated and recently, VanitaBooks, LLC, of Akron an independent publisher of children's literature.
