Misfortune Annie and the Locomotive Reaper - a bookwrap

I had a grand time reading Misfortune Annie and the Locomotive Reaper. I loved the Indiana Jones-style touches in the beginning of the story and found that the Steampunk elements and the influences of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne put a very nice spin on the classic western. The plot is inspired, the characters are well defined and believable, and the action is fast-paced. Misfortune Annie and the Locomotive Reaper is most highly recommended. ~ Jack Magnus, Readers' Favorite

About the book...

Looking for a book with a smart, tough, independent, can-hold-her-own heroine character?  Well look no further.  Annabelle Fortune is the gal for you.  And guess what?  She is an amazing sharpshooter and gunslinger, even admired by Wyatt Earp.  Now that's quite an endoresment.

The story takes place in the American west in the 1800's and we are introduced to Annie who is helping some churchmen get provisions through to hungry women and children.  Unfortunately, it's a total scam and Annie is set up to lead them so they can rob a train heading to Denver.  In her dangerous entanglement she unknowingly stops a flying stranger....yes one literally flying because he is wearing a suit that enables him to do so, from attacking the train and murdering all of its riders.

The government believes that she is the only witness to this  airborne stranger, dubbed the Locomotive Reaper, and deputizes her to help catch the perpetrator.  Can her antiquated guns with her uncanny sharpshooter skills match the advanced deadly gadgetry of the Locomotive Reaper when she does finally face him?

This book is action-packed and full of adventure from the get-go.  The characters are very believable and Annie is portrayed as strong,  brave, and determined .... a heroine for her time.   We also get a glimpse of  her age-appropriate struggles woven into the storyline.  She ponders her self-image and if she has more-than-a-friend feelings for her best friend Wontoa. I like that aspect of a softening of her persona. I feel it makes her more relatable and relevant to her readers who have similar concerns in their lives.

All in all it is a wonderful story that I am sure adults will like reading also, I know I did.  The authors include fun facts at the end of the book that include definitions and learning points that are valuable to that age group.

I highly recommend this book and I personally look forward to the next one.

About the authors...

Not your typical author, Dave Jackson started writing in his constant pursuit to become a renaissance man. Then he fell in love with the art form. Comedy remains one of his many passions and he writes and performs skits as well as stand-up. Also a songwriter and guitarist, Dave has composed over 300 musical titles. A country boy, Dave was raised in Oklahoma and taught 6th grade English for two years. He enjoys sharing the tale about when he climbed high into a towering black jack tree and grabbed a dead branch. Snap! He hurtled toward his death, but he held tight to the branch and it slowed his fall, saving his life. Dave often says that his guardian angel is overworked, considering that early incident and his wild college days and world travels. Settled now in Denver, Dave is passionate about living life to the fullest with those he loves, especially his young son.

Janet Fogg's focus on writing began when she was CFO and Managing Principal of one of Colorado's largest architectural firms. Fifteen writing awards later she resigned from the firm to follow the yellow brick road, and ten months after that signed a contract with The Wild Rose Press for her historical romance, Soliloquy, a HOLT Medallion Award of Merit winner. Janet once participated in a successful rattlesnake hunt (capture, not kill), has climbed two dozen of Colorado's Fourteeners, was alternate on a winning trapshooting team, and recently received her motorcycle endorsement. With husband Richard, Janet co-wrote Fogg in the Cockpit, (Casemate) one of five books nominated in 2012 by the Air Force Historical Foundation for best World War II book reviewed in Air Power History. Janet manages the 359th Fighter Group's Facebook page, sharing WWII stories and photos about the Fighter Group.
